Yes, you're right, but either figure is misleading as it implies a spurious
accuracy, I doubt the actual consumption of lead is known that well, so in
fact the reduction is in the noise, too small to be accurately determined if
we made any difference or not. So far as indium is concerned even I tell
people that you only use indium as a major alloying ingredient if you
absolutely have no other choice. At about a $1000/kg just for the metal
[plays $1 for lead] you need a pretty good reason for wanting it.
So far as the environment etc is concerned I can only repeat one of my
favourite sayings in this zone: "Do confuse matters with logic, faith is
stronger than any evidence so belief wins every time".

Mike

Hello Mike,
Makes one wonder again if such a small reduction (the actual number is
nearer 0.5%) is worth all of the useless expense and mind numbing paperwork
to
industry and risk to the environment, especially since there is no evidence
of
harm or risk of traditional solders and the effect of using alternatives,
it
appears, may well be worse?
(an exception could be lower temperature, but somewhat more expensive
indium
solders, of course... ;-)
The above is a largely rhetorical question as the answer will appear
obvious
to most reasonable folks.
Kind regards,
Joe
