Place
solder paste in a covered container. Open container and dipped the tip.
It comes out clean and shiny.

My granpa used to do that when I was a little boy, decades ago. He teached
me how to solder even stainless steel.
Oldies knew already.

I agree, the tip tinners are not liked by the operators here
neither. We also have the Hakko 599B tip cleaner, it works well.
Something else that I have tried and works well is solder paste. Place
solder paste in a covered container. Open container and dipped the tip.
It comes out clean and shiny.

Speaking of Tip Tinners, I'm trying to discourage their use. I don't
think they're very good for solder tips over the long term, and may
actually lessen their useful life. Anybody else share my view?

What I've been buying for my operators to replace the little cans of tip
tinner is a Hakko 599B Tip Cleaner:

It's a bit more abrasive than a sponge and really cleans the tips well,
including the baked on flux residues that build-up on the tips. I've had
nothing but positive comments from my operators.

Hi Gloria! I recommend your conduct two analytical tests if possible:
(1) an FTIR test to try to match the black residue to either your flux
or tinner; (2) SEM test to see if the black residue is comprised of
metal oxides. Have you tested to see if the 270WR and the tinner are
compatible with each other? Good Luck.

Good Morning,

I need some information if available. I am finding on our lead free
solder irons that there is a black substance that is rising up the
soldering shaft.
We are currently using an Aim 270WR flux, SN100C LF Solder, LF tinner,
Solder iron temp is 720, they are WD1 solder irons.

Can anyone give me some information on what this black substance may be?

Thanks

Gloria
