A hybrid is a group of electronic components that are assembled
together using gold or silver wires or through other interconnect
methods while they are at the chip level.

Read below:

   Microelectronics: Semiconductor Hybrids:

A "Hybrid", short for Hybrid Microcircuit, is a customized circuit
containing "un-packaged" discrete components, such as ICs, resistors and
capacitors.
Significant space savings, as well as improved performance and
reliability can be achieved using Hybrid construction, and as such has
traditionally been used in Military, Space and Aviation applications
where size, performance and reliability cannot be compromised.

Many Hybrid Microcircuits are "custom" designed for specific (Analog
and/or Digital) applications, using "chip" versions of the packaged
parts traditionally used on printed circuit boards. Hybrid circuits can
also incorporate custom thick or thin-film resistors which can be
"actively" laser trimmed for precision circuit performance. For long
term reliability, most Hybrids are contained within a metal or ceramic
"hermetically" sealed package.

Some IC's are refered to as HYBRIDs, why?
