You offer a point worthy of consideration, Gordon. If the product  serves its
useful life (or even dies just a little early) the product  marketer's
efforts to get the consumer to consistently buy the next new  thing will make the
matter of early death moot from their  perspective. Only those who like to use
products for longer periods will be  impacted (e.g. the less financially well
off, for example)

This brings to mind the comments of a sage, whom I cannot identify at  the
moment who said correctly that "Quality is best measure not by the return of
the product but by the return of the customer"

The rather large elephant still standing in the room is that there is no
demonstrable environmental need to use lead free. (unless, of  course, it is to
boost the chances of accelerated failure so we  can give the lead-free
recycling industry a jump start... ;-)
