Gary sent me a picture of his filter assembly so that you could see what he is talking about. The picture is at:

My thoughts are right along Brian's lines, it's heat transfer that's the key. Looking at the filters, it looks like they will suck the heat from too small a tip, so you will need a tip with some mass that will complete the joint successfully.

Steve,
Could you post this picture for me please. Would like to have TechNet's recommended soldering iron temperature settings for this assembly, wire is 22AWG. My thought is to set the soldering iron to 600° Fahrenheit and hold for 1 - 2 seconds (until Sn63Pb37 solder flows and forms a solder joint).
