Joe,

In the MIL-PRF-55110 document (currently at rev G1) there is the statement
"Inactive for new design after 31 December 1997. For new designs use
MIL-PRF-31032".

The MIL-PRF-55110 document is not cancelled per se' as many drawings still
require product to be fabricated to the specification.

If the drawing states MIL-P[RF]-55110 it must be fabricated to the
specification unless the customer allows you to apply a different acceptance
document (i.e. IPC 6012) but then they would have had to received approval
from the end user or even DSCC (Defense Supply Center, Columbus).

The process I'm sure, to gain approval to use the IPC standard would be
arduous.

Regarding revision levels of MIL-PRF-55110. Even though a specific revision
level is identified on the drawing, in this instance revision C, a
fabricator can apply the latest revision provided all requirements of
revision C are met. If you look at appendix D in the 55110 document it
explains this, in my conversations with DSCC VQE personnel their comments
lead me to believe they would prefer this (actually they prefer one
transition to MIL-PRF-31032A).

There are many people that will tell you if it states revision C for
example, then one would have to apply criteria in revision C and certify it
to that. If this were true I respond with why would DSCC then continue to
make revisions to the 55110 document after 1997, as the document can only be
used for existing projects.

The revisions to MIL-PRF-55110 change just like every other standard, due to
new information, data, methods, equipment, fabricator capabilities, etc, and
the 55110 document while not the preferred document by DSCC, must change
with the times.

I hope this helps.

Regards,

Franklin D Asbell

Our PWB expert is out on vacation, and I'm being drawn
into a discussion with a customer about 55110C.

We've moved to 6011/6012 for rigid boards, but I'm not sure
exactly how we've documented or justified this change.

My understanding is that the Mil spec has changed
into a PRF, currently at Rev. G, and it's a practical
impossibility to comply with 55110C because DSCC has
gotten out of the business of administering the requirements.

It would be great if I could show the customer a cancellation
notice for 55110 that points to the IPC specs, but I can't
  seem to find one.

Can anyone illuminate the trail please?
