Craig,
Based on you have arrived at your pad size and want to give it the ole "eye ball" test with a component, we used to photoplot it.  That worded very nicely.  A diazo worked even better, being able to see through it.  Your bare board supplier or EMS folks should be able to supply you with either; so long as it doesn't become a pain in the neck.
