Maybe they never finished the supercomputer because they were missing an
important part of it.

You've done your homelesson well, and are of course curious on what
grade you got. Some of you were very close, especially after I gave the
thread 'clay'. Certain aluminium bearing clays (bauxit) can be refined
and processed to ceramic tapes (HTCC) and a few of you guessed right:
it's a aluminum oxide substrate, but not a simple one. No, the tapes are
processed in BIG BLUE's plant in Boeblingen. At that time probably the
most advanced Multi Chip Module factory in the world. I visited that
wonderland many years ago, in order to buy very advanced LTCCs, but they
had concentrated on HTCC.

What you see on the photo is a little multichip module for a
supercomputer, that I think was never finished. The module has over 50
layers, front side has about 15,000 pads and the backside about 1,000
I/Os! I thought the module was a sample for me, but realized that this
was a mistake. Nobody reflected when I put it in my pocket and went
home. However, I did not show it other than internally at my company. I
don't know what IBM makes in Boeblingen today, but I think the
superadvanced module manufacturing was closed, of some reason I don't
know about. The plant was fully automated and was a dreamland for a guy
interested in multichip module production.

Next week, I'll increase the degree of difficulty. The one who guess
right then will be get the title "TNY" (TechNet's Yoda).

Hi all, am sending a picture to Steve McGregory for his exhibition
wall. You are asked to guess what the picture is showing, a modern
kitchen equipment or what? On Friday you will see how good you were.
