Patent pending is a notice that a patent has been filed. (There are a number
of different types of patents. Utility, [normally device or method], software,
design and plant.)

What the patent pending notice does not tell you is what is specifically
being claimed as the invention. It is possible that there is some unique process
steps that have been found to help make manufacturing easier/better/more
reliable/lower cost, etc. It could take a a couple of years to know what they are
claiming

Lots a layers to the onion...

Go to http://www.uspto.gov/web/offices/pac/doc/general/index.html to read up
on patents

Good luck
Joe
