The typical practice for soldering these high lead alloy parts was to use a
high rosin% flux. These fluxes were made with a dimerized rosin to withstand
the  high heat. As I recall, they had a low level of activator. Talk to your
favorite  Alpha/Cookson guru for such formulations. The other flux makers
probably had  equivalent materials, I'm just familiar with the Alpha prducts from
the old  days.
