Actually, this is not quite correct; at Bell Labs we had CBGA's in 1982—we 
just did not call them ball grid arrays. they started out as CLLCC's with the 
castelations rmpved and solder balls attached to the bottom soldering pads. Our 
soldering pads were either rectangular or circular, and we did not have more 
than 2 rows of solder balls.
