Graham,
Unfortunately there is not a cost effective method for serializing with
epoxy ink.
There is a stamp available that automatically rotates each number which does
reduce time. Depending upon the board quantities you might also consider
LPI-symbolization, with a piece of artwork for the range of units on each
panel, i.e 1 pc of artwork for 1 - 200, next pc of artwork for 201 - 400,
etc etc. The cost of the artwork can be factored into the quote.
When I've applied numbers in this method for commercial work I do electrical
testing and microsection prior to symbolization, for military the symbol
needs to be on even the defects so the step would be solder mask, final
finish (if HASL), electrical test in panel form, symbol including additional
serialization, rout, etc.
This works best thought when you have very large quantities on each panel

Subject: [TN] Epoxy ink serialization
Hi TechNet
I've got a very low tech question today.
We've got a customer who insists on serial numbers marked with epoxy
ink. They will not consider alternatives. We currently use a rubber
stamp with changeable numbers (rotating belt, like a date stamp) to
stamp the serial number. The issues with it are that it's a slow
process and that the repeatability is not great - it's very operator
dependent.
Are there any easier / faster / better methods that don't involve
spending a lot of $$?
Thanks!
- Graham Collins
