Hi folks! Heck, its Friday, this is a good Friday topic and I am an avoid
waterfowl hunter! About 5 years ago the US Fish and Game folks decreed that
all ammunition used for the hunting of waterfowl had to be lead-free. The
reason for this action was that there was clear scientific evidence that
dabbling ducks (those species that feed in shallow water) were ingesting
lead shot resulting in lead poisoning. Waterfowl hunting tends to be in the
same location every year and the ducks tend to use the same locations every
year (thus the lead pellets don't have time to merge into the environment
and the ducks eat the lead shot). Initially, the new "steel" shot that
replaced the lead shot had very poor ballistic performance. Instead of have
a shooting " kill range" of 60 yards, the shooting "kill range" was reduced
to 30-40 yards. The materials folks working for the ammunition companies
worked their magic and now the available nontoxic shot is actually superior
in performance to the old lead shot (killing ranges are now 50-70 yards).
The nontoxic shot is either steel/copper, bismuth, tungsten/plastic, or an
alloy of tungsten, copper and nickel. A follow up study by the US Fish and
Game folks demonstrated that the lead ban had worked - the clear scientific
evidence showed that waterfowl mortality due to lead poisoning dropped by
75%! This "lead" ban is an excellent example of what good scientific
research and sound materials engineering can do - the complete opposite of
what the RoHS legislation represents! If I can shoot straight this weekend
I'll be eating Canadian goose next week. Hope everyone has a good weekend!

The affect on birds of prey (eating crippled waterfowl), especially Bald
Eagles, was the deciding factor.

From what I understand. The main reason for pb free shotgun ammunition
was because of ducks(waterfowl) wounded not killed and then affecting
the predators
such as fox..
