It depends...how far down the hole do you want to chase the rabbit?

For the most part it will be Plastic encapsulated...that is where the
majority of the counterfeits are coming from. So having said that, what
process would be the most effective for that type of de-lidding.

Bobby,
What type of package are you speaking of?
Plastic encapsulated?
Solder sealed or welded?
Glass sealed?
A strategically located single-edge razor blade does quick work of
getting into the solder and glass sealed parts.
Fuming Nitric or sulfuric gets into the PEMs parts nicely.
One technique sometimes requires band-aids. The other requires a fume
hood and a fair degree of personal protective apparatus.
A good quality microscope [and camera set-up for documentation] would
also be required. That alone may cost you $10-20K [new] if you don't
already have one.
Exact answer depends on what you have and what you wish to do. :-)

First thanks again to all of you who helped me with my Bromine issues. I
have another question for you. We are going to start offering in house
testing for counterfeits. We are currently paying $750 per sample at a
test house to have parts de-lidded for examination of the die. From what
I understand this is a pretty easy process. Does anybody have any
background on this to give me a little more information on the process,
so I know what I am getting myself into? How it works, materials needed
for the test, etc.Any feedback I get would be greatly appreciated.
