Hi Ioan!
Digging a little more, I found that there are no qualification test
reports, and the leads are phosphor bronze and it looks like they plate
the tails with pure tin...
I know that there are a lot of components that have phosphor bronze base
material used in the leads, and likewise, many of the solderability
problems I have experienced in the past have been with phosphor bronze
leads.
I dunno, I would be a little leary of that connector...but again it
depends where it's being used. If it's limited life consumer electronics
I'd be less concerned that if it was a class-3 assembly.
I've used SMT headers on some military boards that have been built for
years and never heard of a problem...they were only being used for
jumpers and not having anything plugged into them that really stressed
the solder joints. But in another case where headers were used to
connect to another assembly, the stress on the solder joints was pretty
extreme and the fix for that was to use some VERY high-dollar MasterBond
epoxy to bond the plastic strip of the header to the PCB and help
protect the solder joints.

Subject: [TN] Connector reliability
Hi Technos,
I would like what you think about the reliability of the joints formed
by this connector http://samtec.com/ftppub/pdf/SFMH_SM.PDF
It looks pretty much like a butt joint to me, no real compliance.
And since we're here, what about SMT headers, with their massive pins,
are they reliable?
Thanks,
Ioan
