Hi,

I refer to guru Ellis's book, which one is my 'cleanliness bible'.

1. Industrial non-aerospace/military with conventional components : 2
ug/sqcm NaCl

2. Like the above but with SMCs : 1.5 ug/sqcm NaCl

3. Aerospace/military with ultra high impedance requirements : 1 ug/sqcm
NaCl

4. Hybrid circuits : 0.5 ug/sqcm NaCl

5: wafer manufacturing/handling level: ??

It is interesting to see what wise Brian writes in his comments to these
levels: "Let it be said that the choice of any given limit level value
is arbitrary...." So, the discussions about fractions of micrograms up
or down may be of only academic interest, but meaningless in industry
daily life.

Ourselves, we prefer making SIR-tests for PWBs.

It will be interesting to see what you others apply.....

Subject: [TN] Ionic/Chloride contamination levels

Hi Forum,

Can anyone tell me what is the general industry acceptance level for
chloride contamination on a assembled board for a class 2 product
please.
I am getting conflicting statements from 2 evaluation labs.
One says 6.5ug/in2 is acceptable in the industry.
Another says 3ug/in2 is the industry standard or will/should be the
industry standard.

Is there an IPC committee looking at update the acceptable levels?
Thanks in advance for all inputs, opinions and facts

Regards;
