Francis: As previously stated the maximum level of ionic contamination
per IPC is 10.06 ug/in2 sodium chloride (NaCl) equivalent.

There is no general industry acceptance level. Every industry is
different, consumer electronics, high voltage/power conversion,
measurement, telecommunications, medical, etc. Every electronic product
built will have a different maximum requirement.

Most OEM's have know idea what the maximum allowable or acceptable level
of ionic contamination is for their products. Not to make light of it
but In many cases it's a meaningless number. There are many many
non-extractable or non-ionic factors that can influence product
performance, but that's the one people get hung up on.

The primary goal of ionic contamination testing is to monitor
decontamination performance of the post solder cleaning operation, once
it has been qualified.

In most cases the OEM if they don't know will call out per IPC.... or
call out a number they have determined thru product development testing.

To monitor cleaning processes we use 5.5 ug/in2 sodium chloride
equivalent for a maximum. However we know that many of our products do
not require it, especially a lot of our low voltage digital equipment.
Other products with analog circuitry, high impedance, sensitivity to
signal alteration, etc do require a lower maximum limit for ionic
cleanliness than that called out by IPC.

Subject: [TN] Ionic/Chloride contamination levels

Hi Forum,

Can anyone tell me what is the general industry acceptance level for
chloride contamination on a assembled board for a class 2 product
please.
I am getting conflicting statements from 2 evaluation labs.
One says 6.5ug/in2 is acceptable in the industry.
Another says 3ug/in2 is the industry standard or will/should be the
industry standard.

Is there an IPC committee looking at update the acceptable levels?
Thanks in advance for all inputs, opinions and facts

Regards;
