Being an Allman Brother's fan, I never get tired of hearing Freeboard.

All of the new solvents will require increased freeboard. The retrofit on our unit cost $25,000. But, we went from 55 gallons per month to 5 gallons per month. At the time, the expensive chemistry (snake oil) we were using cost $200 per gallon. The retrofit paid for itself very quickly. All of these materials, Ensolv, Vertrel, Novec, AK-225, have gone up in price to the point where one has to doubt they make sense for defluxing circuit card assemblies. While they do have advantages in some applications. It certainly isn't a process I would initiate on a whim.

Our system took 40 gallons to fill. Another caution, these materials absorb water and you will have a super chiller in the free board area. The chiller coils will condense water from the air and drip into the fluid tank(s). If you vapor clean with the azeotrope version, you will need to include a desiccator in the retrofit, as the water will mess up your snake oil.

Hi Brian!

I read everything at the link you provided, and I am giving it thought. Our degreaser doesn't have an extended freeboard, so that would need to be added if we were to go to Ensolv.

Let me ask you this, what would you use in a vapor degreaser? I did a search on vapor degreasing chemicals and almost everything that I came up with were nPB based...what else can I use?

I do not recommend EnSolv, as it contains nPB. You can learn a little about its environmental and H&S issues - and both require serious thought - at http://www.cypenv.org/worldenv/files/npb.htm.

If you must use it in a vapour degreaser, the recommended practices to reduce emissions include a deep (1½ times the opening diagonal) refrigerated freeboard, automatic sliding doors, small baskets to prevent pistoning the vapour out of the machine, draught-free environment, automatic hoist to respect freeboard dwell times and prevent brusque movements, minimal disturbance when filling/emptying machine and only when cold etc. I would also recommend operators wear badges so that their exposure can be constantly monitored. Listen to the operators for any unusual symptoms. The operators should wear protective clothing, bearing in mind that dermal uptake of nPB can be significant.

UNEP discourages the use of nPB wherever possible.
