Phil,

Would you still happen to have all of the components needed to screen the output from the original source to create the text file needed for the CS400? If so, can I get a copy? The access macro would be appreciated (just save me some time...), if you still have it.

Thanks for all of your help everyone. I'll find a way...

Best Regards,

CAS

Subject: Re: [TN] Contact Systems 400D programming

Chris,

I programmed and maintained our 400E systems for 9 years. Here is what
we did.

We used the text file generated in PADS and ran it through a custom
Access macro to generate a text file in a format I set up for the 400E.
This macro also generated a list of parts not part of the program that
would end up being the "Manufacturing BOM" and a list of non-coded
parts. This non-coded parts list aided us in catching the parts that
were 400E friendly that had not been properly coded for installation.

The Macro text file was then run through the Contact Systems "GenCad"
and "CIM Workbench" programs (that are no longer available from Contact
Systems).

It sounds like a lot of bumper shots, but compared to what CS was more
recently offering it seemed to work quite well.

As for storage, I can't speak for the 400D machines, but our 400E
machines have a 486 processor with a 20 Meg hard drive. We have never
filled one of these drives and never needed to delete programs for added
space. Some of our boards have up to 500 components inserted via the
program.

Contact Systems had a DOS based network package, but we found the
"sneaker net" using floppies was the simplest solution. Good luck
trying to get a DOS based machine to successfully talk with a Windows XP
network or a USB memory stick. We initially kept the programs on
floppies, but since I am no longer involved my successors have dumped
the floppy library in favor of a network system they copy onto the
floppy for loading into the machine.

They are solid performers, but the 400D is ancient technology. Remember
when we thought a 386 with DOS 6.22 was a fast machine?

Phil

Subject: [TN] Contact Systems 400D programming

Hello netters,

We just purchased two old CS400D models to be used to insert components
as a secondary operation to the auto-insertion equipment. Basically if
anything that can't be placed by AI, we want to use the CS400's to
insert as much of the remaining as possible to eliminate manual
insertion errors and other positives. Our Unicam has a module driver
that is able to output a text file in the right format for the CS400's,
but there's a problem. The text file output takes and changes some of
the characters, which causes program errors and we can't determine why.
The other problem is memory - we would like to get away from using the
floppy disks for loading each program. So here are the questions:

- Is there a better and more efficient/ effective way to program these
machines?
- Has anyone ever had this problem and if so, do you have a fix?
- Is there a way to increase the memory (small hard drive, MEM sticks,
etc...) on these older units by adding a module of some sort.
- Does anyone have a programming tool that can be purchased or borrowed
that can convert the unicam or CAD data into the text format required
for the CS400 system?

Any - I mean any help would be useful at this point...

Thanks Yawl!
