I have read the same reports and had to read between the lines. I could
not find an unequivocal recommendation but there were sufficient clues
to deduce that SN100C should not give great cause for concern.
I think if I were selling SAC I could find you data to say that under
some circumstances SAC is better than SN100C and of course if I were
selling SN100C ..........................
In terms of reliability I believe I will be able to answer that question
in a few to 20 years time.

Personally I would not just change alloys without doing trials on boards
that we make to confirm that 'it does what it says on the can' (sorry
that is from a UK advert) and that there are no unexpected problems. I'd
buy more SAC and proceed with caution.

Subject: [LF] Alloy for lead-free wave soldering

Hi Netters,

I am wondering if the last months shed more light on how the various
alloys perform. I have skimmed the report recommended by Dave Hillman,
available at http://www.acqp2.nasa.gov/LFS.htm but cannot see a clear
recommendation.

My stock of SAC305 solder bar is almost depleted and I have to make a
decision: shall I continue with SAC305, or switch to SN100C or SACX?

Beyond the cosmetics of the joints and the maintainability of the solder
pot, what is your feedback on reliability? Since I am running SAC305
paste, if I use a different alloy at wave, shall I expect more trouble
than having the same SAC305 in both processes?

Thanks,

Ioan
