        Hi Al:
A blow hole can be seen with the naked eye. It starts
somewhere where gases are trapped and blow like a volcano, leaving a
visible hole somewhere at the top. Small gas bubbles can leave voids
that are only visible through X-rays. But blow holes is a much greater
amount of gas that actually erupts leaving a crater. The crater does not
necessarily occur at the highest point in the solder joint. Sometimes
the gases come through just a bit off to one side of the highest point.
Blow holes may be a source for solder balls. See 5.2.2 Soldering
Anomalies - Pin Holes/Blow Holes in IPC-A-610D
        Regards,
        Ramon

Can someone direct me to a picture of a blowhole in a older joint? Is
this seen from the surface or is cross sectioning or xray required?

Hi Ioan,

Have you tried and extend your soak time to allow the moisture to escape
prior to reaching the liquidus stage. I have seen this problem before
and slowing down the profile does help reduce this problem.

Multicore WS200 as WS and AIM NC254 as no-clean.

I want to state that both pastes work fine for us and publishing the
details is not related to concerns about their performance.

Ioan, which brand and part number solder paste are you using?

One is ENIG with no-clean paste, the other one is HASL (with WS paste).

Thanks,

Ioan

It may still be a board problem. I would bake some boards and assemble
some suspect parts. By the way, what board surface finish are you using?

Best regards

Hi Technos,

for a couple of days I see occurences of blowholes in the joints of,
guess what, SMT 0603 resistors.

The reflow recipe did not change and we're talking about 2 different
established products, we have run many of each before. One is WS, the
other one no-clean. Each one uses different brand of solder paste, SnPb.

I have changed the paste with fresh one, no positive results. I have
changed the reels with different date codes, Bingo! But even the "bad"
parts were quite fresh, less than one year old. One of them is pure Sn
plated, don't know about the other ones.

The question is: where on Earth can humidity stay in a ceramic resistor?

What else can be the cause of the blowholes? Did not bake the boards,
since changing the components worked, so I guess the PCBs are out of the
hook...

Thanks,

Ioan
