Richard

Great idea, I just put into my notebook! Has the Bellville washer been
around for a while?

Best regards

Correct. The Bellville washer is somewhat conical and provides the
spring needed to retain tension. For optimum performance place a
starwasher on the board surface with the Bellville washer sandwiched
between the star washer and the screw head.

It is a spring washer which has a particular shape. Imagine a washer
that has been "coined " to the shape of a much larger sphere. If you put
the washer down on a flat surface the rim will be in contact with the
surface, the edge by the hole will not. If you turn it up the other way,
the edge with the hole will be in contact the outer rim will not.

These washers act like a regular spring washer but are much better for
this type of application I have found particularly on systems where the
current drain and associated heat is liable to cause expansion and
contraction of the assembly.

No comment about the finish, but you might recommend he use Bellville
washers on the bolt asseblies.

Subject: [TN] Plating Recomendation?

Happy Monday!

I have a customer (we are a fabricator) asking the following question;

"..we are looking at making a board that is intended to be bolted to
some batteries through 6mm and 8mm nuts and bolts. I was wondering if
you have any recommendations on what sort of plating should be on the
pads these nuts are going to screw down onto? The batteries are fairly
heavy and the apparatus may be subject to some vibration and shock.
Thanks for your insight."

I am thinking HASL has been used for years in similar applications but
does anyone have any experience or are there any studies on the matter?

Regards

John Parsons
