I would think, over time, silver and ENIG exposed to atmosphere would
breakdown much sooner than HASL.

Do not use HASL. The reason is that HASL coating is solder, and solder
is soft. Over time, the mechanical connection relaxes as the solder
cold-flows away from under the nuts/bolts/washers. Rather, use a hard
finish such as immersion silver over copper or ENIG. Ideally, the board
pads and the mounting hole rings will all have the same finish, as it is
costly to selectively plate areas of the pwb with a different finish
than is used for the component pads.

Subject: [TN] Plating Recomendation?

Happy Monday!

I have a customer (we are a fabricator) asking the following question;

"..we are looking at making a board that is intended to be bolted to
some batteries through 6mm and 8mm nuts and bolts. I was wondering if
you have any recommendations on what sort of plating should be on the
pads these nuts are going to screw down onto? The batteries are fairly
heavy and the apparatus may be subject to some vibration and shock.
Thanks for your insight."

I am thinking HASL has been used for years in similar applications but
does anyone have any experience or are there any studies on the matter?

Regards

John Parsons
