Yes, it was my intuition that this was going to be messy. By not changing warranties for lead-free products, the EMSs maybe (depending upon product complexity and operating conditions) opening themselves up to unnecessary liability for repair/rework, when it clearly might be a materials property issue!

Also, the question then becomes, who proves whether it was a workmanship issue or an inherent materials property issue (that's where failure analysis comes in I guess!). Wow! I see this getting very expensive very quickly.

I, for one am going to include a statement to that effect for our lead-free products warranties.

I have spoken to numerous EMS co. execs about this. They have all said they same thing: no change to warranties for lead-free product. (Of course, they could be providing misinformation but I would have to do quite a bit of work to prove that.)
