Materials are either conductors or non-conductors. Non-conductors are also
called insulators and have a resistance of 1 x 10E11 ohms or greater.
Dissipative material is conductive, able to remove ElectroStatic charges to
ground, however dissipative is defined as at least 1 x 10E4 ohms and less
than 10E11 ohms. Dissipative material has the ESD control benefit of more
slowly transferring electrostatic charges and is used to avoid rapid
discharge from ESD sensitive items. Conductive material is defined as less
than 10E4 ohms.

ANSI/ESD S541 section 7.2.1 Resistance of Conductive Materials "Conductive
materials may be surface conductive, volume conductive, or both. A surface
conductive material shall have a surface resistance of less than 1.0 x 10^4
Ohms. Volume conductive materials shall have a volume resistance of less
than 1.0 x 10^4 Ohms."

ANSI/ESD S541 section 7.2.2 Resistance of Dissipative Materials "A static
dissipative material shall have a surface resistance of greater than or
equal to 1.0 x 10^4 Ohms but less than 1.0 x 10^11 Ohms. Packaging
materials that are in intimate contact with devices should be dissipative."

ANSI/ESD S541 section 7.2.3 Resistance of Insulative Materials "An
insulative material shall have a surface resistance of greater than or equal
to 1.0 x 10^11 Ohms, or a volume resistance of greater than or equal to 1.0
x 10^11 Ohms."

Subject: [TN] Conductive vs. NonConductive

Technet,

The terms "Conductive" vs "NonConductive" came up in a discussion of a
blind/buried via fab today and these were new terms to me relative to a
PWB.

Can anyone provide a brief definition of this or point me to something
that explains it in terms of a fab. Unfortunately, the person that made
the statement was more of a procurement person that was quoting specs, but
did not really have an explanation of the requirement or difference.

Is this an industry standard (new) term associate with PWB requirements,
or is this just something someone used and its been passed on.
