Werner is correct.
Sometimes, for smaller pwb assemblies, you can get away with using butt
joints on SMT pads, but you need to completely fasten the connector body
somehow to prevent any stress from being applied to the pins. Even if
you do that successfully, the CTE mismatches between the connector and
the pwb are going to put tremendous stresses on the radial connector
pins butt-soldered to the board. They need some type of compliancy in
order to prevent these stresses from being directly transferred to the
solder joints.

Butt-joints are an absolute NO-NO for any SMT solder attachments, but
even more so [how to you step up from absolute NO-NO?] for connectors.
