In the early days of laminate all were difunctional - simple polymer
chains bonding the package together. Tetrafunctional had bonding
formats in 2 polymer chains - thus called Tetra because the 2 chains
linked have 4 ends.
Polyclad developed a material called Tetra II in the mid 1980's and this
was a tetrafunctional resin that had a Tg of 170 F. This was the basis
for the current system used in the FR-370.
As laminate/resin developers began to improve on the tetrafunctional
systems by blending resins to improve performance, they began the term
these multifunctional systems. Multifunctionals are by design
tetrafunctional and I would use the term interchangeably.

Subject: [TN] tetra-functional vs multi-functional
What's the difference between a tetra-functional laminate
and a multi-functional laminate? Any performance
differences? When would somebody specify a multi-functional
over a tetra-functional? Are they inter-changeable?
Thank you in advance,
Eddie Rocha
