Mornin' Phil,
From your description, it sounds like the pins would wind-up with
nothing more than butt-joints. If it were me, I would be pretty worried.
What is being plugged into these connectors?
A lot of SMT connectors that I've seen have some sort of separate metal
tab at each end that is molded into the body and soldered to help with
the stresses and protect the solder joints of the signal pins. It's
either that or hardware that is installed at each end after soldering to
protect the signal pins solder joints.
I would choose PTH over butt-joints...

Subject: [TN] Connectors - Surface Mount versus Thru-hole
Good morning colleagues,
This is a question of robustness. I have 3 and 4 pin connectors with
0.045" square pins that are on 0.156" centers.
I have a choice between SMT and PTH versions.
I see the SMT connectors more manufacturing friendly, but I'm concerned
I will meet resistance in using these as there is the belief that they
will not withstand handling shock in the finished product, a shoe box
sized device that is shipped via UPS, DHL or FedEx.
What sage wisdom do you have to share?
