Kind of like HOURS:MINUTES:SECONDS.  Makes sense to me!

Once again, the YYYY-MM-DD format is an international standard.  ISO
8601 sets the standard for the use of this date format.  And if one
stops to think about it, this is the only logical date format to use as
it puts the information in order of significant digits.  In base ten,
the smallest value is the last information encountered (i.e. one
thousand nineteen = 1019).
You would never write nine and ten and one thousand (9+10+1000) or ten
and nine and one thousand (10+9+1000).  That being said, it is a little
weird to use at first, but becomes very comfortable to use after a very
short period of time.
