Hi Bonnie!

I believe the study that you're looking for is at:

http://pcbwizards.com/CMAP%20Hillman%20paper.zip

It's a 14.5 mb zipped *.doc file, so be patient...

Ioan,

Would you have a link to the study by Rockwell-Collins about premature
failures on lead-free BGA's soldered with leaded paste? Our
manufacturing partner is insisting that the 2000 pieces they've just
accidentally processed with lead-free BGA's and leaded paste x-ray fine;
but I have my doubts on long-term reliability based on their processing
temperature profile which barely touches 217 degrees C for about 30
secounds.

Thank-You,

Allen,

there is almost no issue with RoHS components on HASL soldered with
leaded paste. Most components have been RoHS for a long time, one
example would be the connectors with golden pins. So no worry, unless we
are talking BGAs. There is a study by Rockwell-Collins showing premature
failures on the lead-free BGAs soldered with leaded paste.

Regards,

Ioan

Has anyone done any investigation on solder joints or what ever effects
happen with ROHS components in a HASL PCB and assembly process?

Just curious about what happens to those who are exempt from ROHS.

  Thanks,
