In my opinion its time we treated RoHS just like drugs. That is, "just say no" to lead-free in electronic solders. If enough industry folks say no, lead-free may hopefully die. Folks across the "pond" have created an environmental monster with little tangible saving of our environment, with much technical risk in eliminating lead from solder. Its kind of like ISO 9000, a vehicle for a lot of folks to make a lot of $.
Look what took place when folks banned Freon as a cleaning solvent to save the ozone layer. Folks banned one of the most effective electronic cleaning solvents, but at the same time did not ban cattle "flatulence" which is my understanding that this deletes more ozone that all the Freon did (so some folks say). It is my understanding that banning Freon type materials also contributed to more tiles falling off the space shuttle due to NASA desire to be environmentally responsible.
What we need is an international policy similar to what IPC preaches. That is, don't create a requirement unless it can be backed up by data. Where is the science data that shows if we delete the miniscule amount of lead from electronic soldering we will save the environment?
I am all in favor of saving the environment where this makes sense and can be done in an economical manner and is the right technical thing to do. But this elimination of lead from solder will do little to save the environment.

Thanks Ramon.
Looks like some of those in the media are gaining interest in depth over
demagogy.
"NASA safety studies show that an inadvertent thruster firing could tear
apart the station and a docked shuttle, triggering rapid
depressurization of both spacecraft and killing all aboard"
No problem there for the members of the EU Parliament ... only a problem if
you are on one of the two craft :-(
As was noted earlier, this misguided mandate called RoHS (but mostly tagged
lead-free for marketing purposes) is poised to extend its reach and possibly
(likely?) negative reliability effects beyond intentions, simply because of
the confusion and arbitrariness of the choices.
Small examples...Why 0.1% Pb for electronics when the EPA allows 0.2% for
water pipe solders? Why WEEE and then RoHS, WEEE should obviate RoHS (certainly
seems very true for lead)
John rightfully pointed out that the EU parliament appears to be a
bureaucracy without a country. I would add that it appears also to have authority
without responsibility.
And so it goes...
Joe
