Problem is this doesn't do much for me if I'm using SAC305.

Joel,

Sorry I mis-quoted you, I apologize.

Our lab uses J-STD-001 specs and they list as follows:

Tin 94.5 - 97.5%
Arsenic 0.030% max
Antimony 0.500% max
Gold 0.200% max
Iron 0.020% max
Nickel 0.010% max
Bismuth 0.250% max
Aluminum 0.005% max
Copper 0.300% max
Silver 3.750 - 4.250 %
Zinc 0.005% max
Cadmium 0.005% max
Indium 0.100% max
Sulphur 0.005% max
Phosphorous 0.010% max
Lead balance

Hope this helps

Jason,
I can't find where I used the term "then one of the alloy components".
When
I say "if not one of the alloy components" the test looks like this.

Copper specification is 0.3wt%. I always fail that spec because I am
using a
0.5% copper alloy. So the lab says it is fine because the metal is "one
of
the alloy components". What they don't tell me is at what level the
copper
content is really too high and I need to change the solder in the pot.
Similarly I also fail the silver every time. At the moment I am
deciding, on
my own, when the other metal levels are "out of spec" and am looking for
someone to validate my numbers by providing an "industry standard"
specification for lead-free tests.

If you could provide the SN96.5 specification your lab uses that would
provide information that I can use to validate my numbers assuming it is
a
96.5Sn, 3.0Ag, 0.5Cu alloy. Thanks Joel

I don't understand what you mean by the "then one of the alloy
components"
statement. However, if your lab is testing by Sn/Pb standards, then you
should fail the high amount of tin every time. My lab tests with an
SN96.5
spec. What was funny is that one test we "failed" or we were out of spec
on
the SN content, but they had inadvertently selected SN96 for the test
instead of SN96.5. Even that minute change threw us off (they corrected
it
though), so I think testing to Sn/Pb would make you fail every time.

I have the solder tested in my solder pots on a regular basis. However,
the
testing lab continues to provide results based on Sn/Pb standards even
though the solder is lead-free. The lab clarifies the results with the
"if
not one of the alloy components" statement.

I was wondering if there was a different contamination levels chart for
lead-free solder that I could get my testing lab to use.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
