US patent 6,940,168 by IBM is for square pads, so an xray sees a square
and knows it is wetted out, since it starts out as a ball

Not sure where it came from, but I know I was using it in 1998 at
Smartflex systems on flip chip................8-)

Hi John,

I am pretty sure that there is a patent out there that covers the
"keyhole"
idea for easing the inspection of BGAs using x-ray. I cannot remember
if it
was Motorola or Compaq but I reasonalby confident it was one of the
two.

Very best,
Joe
