PS - it also has applications for desoldering and repair.

Fair enough.

I have used the Asscon Quicky for prototyping work - it is a small no
frills VP oven with a relatively low price tag. There is some fluid
loss, but not a significant amount.

I made a few mods to it that improved the performance somewhat - if
anyone needs details they can contact me directly.

Jeff

        Hi Jeff:
My understanding of the unwritten rule is that a salesman should
not promote their own equipment, but if you know of a good product or
equipment it would benefit the whole forum if you share that info.

Hi all,

I have had good results with another brand of VP oven - but I'm not
supposed to name names here am I...?

The reason that you won't find fluids much higher than 260 degrees is
that the fluoro polymer breaks down at 300 degrees to produce
hydrofluoric acid, which is really nasty stuff. Below this temperature
it is claimed to be quite safe. Very good reason for operators to avoid
getting the fluid on their hands and then smoking - they end up
breathing the HF straight in! Not nice.

Jeff Brown

 Honestly,

I've never had to clean the preheat section. However, the vapor chamber
is where I've spent most of my time. You'll get flux residue on the
walls, and a nice green "algae-ish" stuff on the cooling coils. And
you're right, it is NOT fun to clean. I wouldn't try the Easy-Off
either, it just makes more of a mess than anything. I definitely clean
more often then 200 hours.

I would imagine the 230 fluid you have is for 63/37 soldering.

BTW, I tried looking fluid that went higher than 260 (for HMP paste). I
couldn't find any.

Hi Jason!

We have some of the same fluid as you, although we have some LS-230 too
(not quite sure why that fluid is there...need to ask some questions
about that.

I read the manual and it said the vapor chamber should be cleaned every
200 hours of operation, is that what you've found too? Or should it be
cleaned more (or less) often? Also, is the vapor chamber what gets most
dirty?
Or
does the area around the preheat panels get dirty too?

Looking at the machine, I can see that it is going to be a pain to clean
everything down inside the vapor chamber as they state in the manual.

Hi Ramon,

Pros:
-Ability to process problematic high temp boards (thicker than .063",
high layer counts, etc.) and not have to jack with as many variables as
in convection or IR -Excellent thermal equilibrium across the assembly
and not having to worry about shadowing or thermal thieving -Probing
your board to determine preheat and then knowing your peak area's temp
already and looking through a little window to observe reflow and giving
an extra 15 or 20 seconds over for wetting

Cons:
-Fluid is expensive and if you have excess dragout, you will notice
financially. Fluid is about $1000/gallon -Higher than usual expectations
for tombstoning if your board design is a little lopsided (heavy ground
planes connected to one side of passives) or if your process is a little
off.
-Machine is a booger to clean

        Hi Jason:
I believe that Vapor phase has a lot of good merits.
Could you share your experience with the machine? Pros and Cons.
        Regards,
        Ramon

Hello Steve,

We have a RD here and we use Galden HS-260

Mornin' All!

I've just got the opportunity to work with a new vapor phase reflow
system here at my new position. It's a RD Technologies RD3 with a vapor
recovery system. We're in the process of hooking it up, we haven't yet
started it up.

I worked with a vapor phase many years ago (1988), and this system is
much nicer than what I remember about the system I worked with in the
past.

I was wondering if there are any RD Technologies users out there that
have any "words of wisdom" that they might share with me about the
system I'm that going to be working with. BTW, we're going to using
Galden heat transfer fluids.

Kind regards,
