HF goes straight to the bone and makes the bone into
mash and it is very painful. I had an experience with it from a
punctured glove. Calcium shots on the affected area to counteract the
effects are administered to the victim also calcium should be taken
orally. The person will not know that he has come in contact with HF
till it reaches the bone and there will be a reddish area where it
contacted the skin. Yes it is nasty. Use plenty of gloves and rinse and
rinse after working with it, then it is not so bad to use it.

They shouldn't smoke anywhere near any fluoropolymer vapour, liquid or
particle. Many decades ago, I had an employee turning a piece of PTFE
and some swarf flew up onto a lit ciggy dangling from his lips. Result:
he was taken into hospital intensive care, after a couple of hours, for
5 days, not so much from the HF but because of carbonyl fluoride, F2CO.
This is a close relative to phosgene (Cl2CO) but is even more toxic and
the poor guy had permanent lung lesions. Fortunately, we had a no
smoking notice clearly posted in the machine shop, so he was held
responsible for the accident. F2CO can also result from inhaling VP
vapour through lit tobacco. Nasty stuff.
