Yes, you can convert ceramic LGAs to column grid arrays.
There are two ways of getting columns--high-melt solder wire columns and cast
solder columns. The latter are possible to be longer and will give greater
reliability, but are more expensive. In either case, you certainly will get
incrased reliability over BGAs, roughly [and I MEAN ROUGHLY] by a factor of the
square of the height ratio.
