Hi Dave! The JSTD-002B Solderability specification can be used to determine
how solderable a component surface finish is at any point of its life. The
general industry consensus is that a component surface finish should have a
solderability shelf life of 12 months in typical storage environment and
the majority of the industry component fabricators are in agreement with
the 12 month figure. Many component surface finishes will have acceptable
solderability for longer than 12 months. My recommendation is to find the
middle ground with sales/operations in setting up a shelf life system in
which solderability is acknowledged to be finite, monitored and that all
groups involved realized that costs saved in large lot buys can be costs
lost due to solderability process defects. Good Luck.

Leo,

Thanks for the advice. I prefer not to use these parts but may have to
consider the solderability testing, etc. if no other options are
available. I'm now challenged with convincing the sales and operations
people that 16 weeks is the best option.

Do you think that specifying 2 years maximum shelf life is a reasonable
policy?

Regards,
Dave B
