You know what they say - you shouldn't believe eveything you read. The
stories are generally nonsense. In the case of Captain Scotts cans he
used in the antartic 1. they used a solder with significant amounts of
Pb in (~50%) for the joints 2. there is no evidence of tin pest on them
3. there is evidence of mechanical cracking from poor soldering
procedures 4. we have opened some cans that were recovered from the
antartic in the 1950's and the food inside was still fine 5. other
explorers also took cans and had no problem 6. Captian Scott may have
made other mistakes that led to his downfall e.g. attempting to use
horses rather than dogs to pull his sleigh.....

When I read the tin pest articles, a question kept coming back to my
mind. Why does all of the information state that the tin must be nearly
100% pure in order to undergo the allotropic transformation at cold
temperatures, yet the examples they state, such as the tin cans
disintegrating, etc., could hardly have been made of pure 100% tin. I
would think it very unlikely that soldered tin cans would "by accident"
have been made of 100% pure tin.

Dear LFers,

Are there any solder manufacturers offering solders (RoHS compliant)
that are specified for sub zero use, preferably high melting rather than
SnBi?

I'm designing a product for imaging weld formation (big industrial 12"+
thick welds). This will be used in unheated environments, some outdoors,
so will need to survive North American winters. It will also be marketed
in Europe and the UK. My interpretation of the UK is that there will
likely be no exemptions in the statute law enforcing RoHS.

Best Regards

David Greig

Dear LFers,

if I get it right, I should really worry about this tin pest. We kinda
see below zero temperatures here in Montreal! So there is a risk that
cell phones die on us in the street, that the car electronics start
falling apart, etc.

Nah, this cannot happen! Just another bad dream...

All the best,
Ioan
