Please believe me I am not making light the tragic death of this poor
child, but how allegorical to the current situation. Technical blockage
to the passage of this politically seasoned Bill may be more life( as in
career ) threatening, than to swallow the bitter pill of the inevitable
and deal with it metabolically.

The boy died not as a result of the lead ingestion into his bloodstream,
but as a result of the pendant becoming stuck in his digestive system,
and as it was too much lead to dissolve quickly and work its way through
his system, the blockage caused him to die.

Sheri,

I do not claim to be a chemist, but doesn't the last article about the
Minneapolis boy sound a little fishy?

.... "This particular charm was almost pure lead and the stomach acid in
the boy dissolved in him and he died as result of that,"

If it were almost pure lead wouldn't it have tarnished quickly, being
visually unpleasing - and quite soft.

This sounds more like a preface to an impending lawsuit to me...

One should not be swallowing such things in the first place - lead
containing or not. In any event, it is unfortunate the child died - for
any reason!

I would like to hear what the more chemistry minded individuals on the
forum have to say

Dave -
Below is a brief listing of sites that might be of interest regarding
the US Consumer Product Safety Commission reaction to Children's jewelry
containing lead. Initially, the products were identified as inexpensive
items from vending machines or discount stores, but more recent recalls
make it apparent that items are now coming from higher profile
department stores.

Hi Sheri,

It would be nice to know or see the CPSC note on list about these
products.

I think this helps us all as engineers/scientists better understand lead
Pb and how it might be bad in one way or another for human health yet be
good in another use like electronics.

The more information we have about lead poisoning the better we are
informed to support lead in other ways with the inhabitants of our
culture and our profession.

P.S. Your choice if you wish to paste my note OnList. I don't mind.

Love the Puns!

Another recall-related topic:
In my lead-related searches I've discovered that the CPSC has recently
devoted a good deal of time investigating lead poisoning in children
caused by pendants.

I suspect that we've all seen young children sucking on their necklaces.
Now with outsourced manufacturing beyond the reaches of normal
regulation it's been found that these pendants often contain lead.
Children will often put pendants in their mouths, and with the sweet
taste of lead those pendants stay there long enough to cause a problem.
There have been some very sick children.

I venture to say that this issue will cause (and probably already has
caused) much more lead poisoning than SnPb could ever be accused of.

Sigh, why can't we concentrate on making changes that will actually make
a positive change in the environment - and in this case actually
decrease the measurable blood lead levels in the human race?

Sorry, no puns, just my two cents.

Happy Spring everyone!
Sheri
