It's not invalid until that is decided by a court of law in the
country(ies) it's patented in, and that can be a very long and costly
process. You need to look at the claim(s), not the description, of the
patent to see precisely what is patented. Often prior art is cited in a
patent and a minor change in the claim(s) compared to that art is all
that is needed to get the patent.

As I said, Bell Labs used rectangular pads in the 1981/82 timeframe,
clearly making this patent invalid because of prior art.
