Peter,
I did my own tape and reeling for about 7 years. It was not all that
difficult. The system I used had a vision camera that would look at pin one
and the part number to keep from putting parts in the tape incorrectly.

Our biggest challenge was getting a good cover tape / carrier tape pair. The
process of getting a good cover tape seal is very important.

As always you will want to do a cost analysis looking at equipment cost, raw
material cost and people cost versus outsourcing the taping operation or
just doing the build as you have been (i.e. fighting with bulk, cut tape,
etc.)

Subject: [TN] Tape and Reeling parts

Technetters,

I would like to hear of any experiences with assemblers doing their own
tape and reeling of smt parts internally. Is it as simple as it looks?
I really like the flexibility of this idea when we encounter parts
supplied by customers that can not run on our machines due to the
packaging (ie. Bulk, cut tape).

Thanks

Peter
