This is a common practice. You can also dab an opaque coating onto the
faducial and achieve the same effect.

Never used 'em, but aren't there things such as X-out fiducials?  i.e.,
a fiducial for each board in the array, placed on the rails, such that
the fiducial can be Xed-out, indicating automatically to the pic-n-place
that the board is not to be populated.
