We use natural brushes also in our conformal coating operation. We have never had any ESD issues caused by the bristles. Another important tool we have in place is the de-ionizing fan.

There are ESD-safe brushes, including paintbrushes. I believe they are
made of horsehair. Look in the Techni-tool catalog, or similar tool
catalogs. We use some that have blue metal handles, and the bristles are
wired together and connected to the metal handle. If the operator is
grounded, any charge built up on the brush will be drained to ground.

I read somewhere that only Llamas and Nutria (the rodents that live all
over
Louisiana) have ESD safe hair.

OK, I have not asked a stupid question all day, so I am due.

We do a fair amount of conformal coating by hand, using artist brushes.
Would you consider paintbrushes with soft nylon bristles to be ESD
hazards and if so, why?
