There was a significant amount of data in many of the classic (e.g. old)
proceedings from NEPCON, etc. on the great 'oil in the wave' wars between Hollis
and Electrovert. Correct oil in the wave was found to significantly reduce
the amount of solder defects in wave solder operations. (I had my own
preference in oil at that time, contact me by email off-line to get further
information.) The surfactants in the oil helped to lower the surface tension of the
solder to prevent bridging, etc., thus acting as a auxiliary surfactant to the
components of the flux.
