Thanks for everyone's help. We have a pretty good idea of what we need
to do and how to do it. I have a couple of vendors coming in to see me
this week for proposals. Thanks again. Steve Kelly

Hipotronics, Associated Research, Quadtech and Slaughter make Hipot
testers. there are probably others.

Hipotronics are the best (they are made here at GAI-Tronics ;) ).

Steve, the dielectric test is often called a hipot test (high
potential). I
have very limited experience with these in a former life. Your stated
test
requirement of 500 VDC makes sense to me, but the 5000 ohms does not.
Normally, a hipot test is run by applying a voltage, usually starting at
zero and ramping up to the required test voltage, and checking for
current
leaking to ground or another conductor. The tester will shut down if
leakage current is detected, and will tell you the voltage that the
failure
occurred at. If no leakage current was detected up to the specified
voltage, the hipot test passed. If a hipot test fails once on a
specimen,
it will usually fail again next time at a lower voltage because you get
some
carbon arcing at the point of failure, which reduces the dielectric
strength. On products I have worked with, 100% hipot testing was done
as a
UL requirement. This was on commercial food warmers and cookers.

You should be able to find more information and manufacturers of hipot
testers by searching the Internet for hipot tester. You might even find
a
hipot tester on eBay as someone's industrial surplus.

Fellow Technetters,
We have been asked by a customer to do a dielectric withstanding voltage
on a flex circuit. The requirement is 500Vdc at 5000 ohms. I have a
couple of questions: 1) who supplies such equipment and 2) I am under
the impression they want this on every net on every circuit - isn't this
normally some coupon or AQL basis? Thanks in advance. Regards Steve
Kelly
