Kenny,

Refer to J-STD-001C section 9.2.4.3 "Partially Visible or Hidden Solder
Connections". Basically says that such connections are acceptable as long
as the joints you CAN see are acceptable and process controls are
maintained. ie: if the visible joints are good, the invisible ones must be
too!

In a former life we spent a lot of time and money x-raying solder fill of TH
soldered connectors with invisible joints. This was because the customer
required the x-ray inspection. We hardly ever saw cause for concern. My
experience was that the most difficult to solder pins (in regards to being
tied to the most thermal plane within the PCB) are typically the power and
ground pins. Conventional connector designs almost always have power and
ground pins as pin 1 or the last pin(s) of the connector row(s), and these
are almost always the outer (and visible) rows of the connectors.

Hope that helps,
Kevin Glidden

Are they wave-soldered?

Hi John,

Your assumption is correct, it is a through hole board. We have thermal
spokes around all internal layers but it still sucks up a lot of heat.

Ken,
I assume that these are thru hole solder joints. If they are then the only
inspection tool is x-ray. Was or could thermal relief be used around these
holes?

John
