Actually that just woke me up,

How can someone get a patent on "embedded actives" when SMART card
manufacturers have been putting them into cards since around '86 or so??

And thinking about it I helped put a full blown computer chip into a
SMART card along with LED's etc just before Christmas.....

You may wish to go even further back in the time machine.

Unistructure was develoing and building such product in the 1980s, Look
also
at the work of DEC (later Micro Module Systems) and GE from the early
1990s

Matushita (it might have been Mitsubishi) showed embedded  actives as
well
for smart card applications.
