You may wish to go even further back in the time machine.

Unistructure was develoing and building such product in the 1980s, Look  also
at the work of DEC (later Micro Module Systems) and GE from the early  1990s

Matushita (it might have been Mitsubishi) showed embedded  actives as well
for smart card applications.
