Just curious as to why older SMT placers cannot place a SMT part? Is the
placer a gripper style only, with no vacuum? If any vacuum is available,
nearly all of the SMT connector companies include an insert for vacuum
pickup.
Else get the connector with retention pins that align the connector. You
may need to add holes in the pwb to accomodate this change.

I have programmed a Robot based system for odd-form component placement
(Thru Hole). This was manufactured by Universal Instruments in the early
90s. do not know if this is relevant or not.

Hi Everyone,

I was wondering if anybody has used a robot for SMT placement. I have a
few SMT connectors that can't be placed by my older SMT equipment and I
could never justify new equipment just for these parts. We are hand
placing some of the parts right now, but there is a new board on the
horizon that is not layed out well for hand placing a .020" pitch
connector, so I'm thinking that a low cost robot (is that an oxymoron?)
might work. Any thoughts or experiences?

Thanks in advance.
