Cost
Silver is predicted to rise in popularity, it already is.
Cost - in the UK we haven't seen a significant difference in price for
SME volumes.
ENIG - we have used for over 10 years with good success on SMT product.
For thru hole where we used HASL we have switched to Silver with great
success. For mixed smt/thru builds we used ENIG but have tried silver
and found it to be much better so are looking to move to silver on all
apps except where gold is required for direct connectors or key pads.
Regards,
Chris

Subject: [LF] Silver and Gold
(kinda makes me want to sing along with Burl Ives....)
We had originally planned to go to ENiG plating for all of our RoHS
boards. But when we presented the spreadsheet showing the cost of RoHS
compatible boards, management's reaction was "gold plated boards!? No
wonder it costs so much!" So to placate them, we changed specs on wave
soldered boards to Immersion Silver. But now we are getting complaints
from the suppliers.
Is everyone else finding that Silver is as expensive/more expensive than
Gold? Is this becoming a trend? Will fabricatoors move more and more
awy
from silver in the future? Our manufacturing prefers gold, our
suppliers
prefer gold, now I need to find a way to justify gold as a cost savings
to
replace silver - the original cost savings.
Pete
